Birthday Month Giveaway Announcement

Happy October, friends! For those of you who don’t know (and haven’t noticed I’m a total Libra), my birthday is this month!

I used to love celebrating my birthday as a child and especially as a teenager, but as I’ve gotten older, it’s lost a lot of the pizzazz (adulthood has a way of really making things bland, huh?!). I’ve also been tossing around ideas for paying-it-forward and wanted to do so around my birthday. I know there are loads of ways to do this (like collecting donations for charity in lieu of gifts – a past colleague of mine did this and I thought it was great), but I’m taking another route: I’m going to be hosting WEEKLY (!) Giveaways during the month of October to share the love with you, my loyal readers!

giveaway announcement

How the Giveaway will work – the Basics

Every Wednesday in October (7th, 14th, 21st & 28th), I will post the new giveaway details here on the blog. I’ll include what you can win (most of which will be my creations! And maybe a few goodies handmade by people I love) and how you can enter. You will have until Friday Sunday at midnight to enter. See Entry Rules below for more information.

I will be using Rafflecopter to “host” the giveaway. To enter, you will follow the link at the bottom of the post which will take you to the Rafflecopter giveaway where you will enter. You’ll be given multiple options for entry ranging in “value” (number of points it will get you) so that you can choose which method(s) you would like to use to enter. You can find more information on what it’s like to enter a Rafflecopter giveaway here

UPDATE: I had issues embedding the giveaway (long story short: WordPress + Rafflecopter = a gamble with whether it’ll actually embed – there are many reasons why and it appears I fall into one of those). Because of that, you will need to follow the link at the bottom of the post to Rafflecopter’s site where the giveaway is posted. Entry is the same as it would have been – you are just opening a separate window to do so (sorry for the inconvenience).

How to ensure you’ll hear about the giveaways

I’ll post the new giveaway every Wednesday at 8:00am EST. You could always go the old school route and set calendar reminders to check the site…OR you can use one of the methods below:

Subscribe to receive blog posts via email – If you’re not already, you can “subscribe” to my blog to receive new posts via email.

If you’re on a computer, look for the box matching the image below in the upper right corner of your screen. If you’re on your mobile device, scroll all the way to the bottom and it will appear. Enter your email address into the bar and click “Follow.” Boom. Now you’ll receive an email each time I post something new to the blog.

blog follow

Because the automation of today’s technology is much more consistent than my memory, subscribing via email is the best method to guarantee you’ll hear about the giveaway.

Follow me on Twitter – I have set up the blog so that it will automatically tweet a link to new posts as they are published. You can find me on Twitter here or search for @jordslice11.

Follow the blog on Facebook – I will be posting links to the giveaway after they have been published on the blog’s Facebook page. To receive alerts via Facebook: Make sure you have “Liked” the Facebook page. Then hover over “Liked” or click the carrot (downward pointing triangle) to display options (see image below). Select “Get Notifications” to receive a notification each time something new is posted to the Facebook page. Additionally or rather than, you could also select “See First” to see new posts at the top of your newsfeed (on your Facebook home page).

fb subscribe

Follow me on Instagram – Each Wednesday I’ll post a picture of the week’s giveaway prize. Follow me on Instagram here or search for @jordslice11.

Entry Rules – Make sure you read them all!

For each giveaway, you will have until Friday Sunday evening at midnight to enter. You will be required to submit your mailing address when you enter the raffle. This information will only be used if you win the raffle. Additionally, you will also be required to submit your email address so that I can contact you to let you know you have won. I will email the winner by Saturday afternoon and will announce the previous week’s winner on the new giveaway post for that week (each Wednesday).

Shipping of prizes – Giveaway prizes will be shipped via USPS to the winner. I’m sorry, but due to the high costs of shipping (and this being a sole investment of yours truly), this giveaway is only open to recipients with a shipping address within the continental United States.

Prizes will be shipped to the winner no later than the first week of November 2015. Winners will be sent a tracking number via email when the package is shipped. I am not responsible for items lost by the postal service. In all the time I have been shipping my goodies, I have not (*knock-on-wood!*) had this happen so I’m very hopeful we won’t run into this issue, but if we do I cannot replace the item.

Who can enter – As stated above, I am only able to ship prizes to mailing addresses within the continental United States. You can only enter each giveaway once. If you win one of the giveaways, you are still eligible to enter the future giveaways (meaning: you can win more than one of the giveaways!).

Disclaimer – This blog is run by little ole me (remember me?) and only me. That being said, I reserve the right to modify these rules as necessary (this is a learning process – it’s my first giveaway). I will reserve this right for emergency situations where it is truly necessary for me to change the rules (I like to stick to my word – I am a Southerner, after all 😉 ).

Social Media – I would love love love it if you share about the giveaway on Social Media! You can tag me on Instagram and Twitter with my handle: @jordslice11. I will also be posting links to the weekly giveaway on the blog’s Facebook page so you can share with your friends there.

Additionally, if you win a prize, I would love it so very much if you post a picture of you enjoying your prize to social media and tag me. Seeing others enjoy something I’ve made (or something I love), makes my heart so happy.

For fun: let’s practice! Below is a link to my first Rafflecopter giveaway. I set it up to give you an idea of what it will be like to enter the giveaway each week. There are several options for entry – some will give you more “points” than others. For this particular giveaway, you are only obligated to leave your mailing address (so I know where to send the postcard). Once you enter your mailing address, additional options will appear for you to earn extra points. Follow the link below to enter:

And “waste not, want not” – I’ll pick a winner from this sample giveaway to send a Rachel Tenny postcard (I just stocked up on her latest collection!) – because who doesn’t love snail mail?!

resliced Happy Mail #2

#reslicedHappyMail is officially in full swing (I guess sending the 2nd piece counts as “full swing”, right?!).

The second piece of #reslicedHappyMail was sent to a lady named Winter (is that not the coolest name ever?!). Winter is a pre-kindergarten teacher (bless her) who loves Starbuck’s and hanging out with her gal pals.

Winter’s sister nominated her, and you know I have a weak spot for sisters 🙂

In the nomination form, Winter’s sister said “My sister is amazing! She’s so kind-hearted and cares about EVERYONE. She is the person that makes your issues her issues and truly cares about the happiness of others around her.” Sounds like a pretty stellar gal, right?

In my mind, I had started to create some kind of inspirational card for her because it sounded like she may be going through a spell all us ladies can relate to. One that reminded me of an all-too-familiar quote…

The painting above is by a gal who is quickly turning into one of my favorite people. I’ve already fangirled about her on here several times, but a few weeks ago I finally had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Tenny in person. She’s just as sweet as I’d imagined and she generously donated a set of her Flower Cards to the #reslicedHappyMail project. Oh, boy was I beside myself when I received those! #HappyDance

Rachel’s posts always make me feel inspired, empowered and understood. Because of that, I knew one of Rachel’s Flower Cards was exactly what I wanted to send to Winter.

Do you love these cards or DO YOU LOVE THESE CARDS?!

And so…off goes the second piece of #reslicedHappyMail!

In other news, I received a little happy mail of my own this weekend! My sister is a Reading Coach at an elementary school (where she taught 2nd grade for 5 years) and recently hosted a Donors Choose project to help raise money to buy books for her students. The best part about Donors Choose is that they will offer a code to match your donation at some point during the project (I always give during this window of time because it doubles the distance my donation goes…even if it’s only a small amount). I absolutely love Donors Choose – it’s a great platform for teachers to raise funds to help their students (and it’s an easy way for those of us not in the classroom to be able to help). From time to time they’ll even send me credits that I can “gift” to any project I want (how cool?!).

On Saturday I found a package in my mail box full of drawing from my sister’s students thanking me for my donation to her recent project (to get them books):

donors choose

Y’all know my feelings on thank you notes [always a must] so obviously these completely melted my heart.

You can see pictures of her amazing students enjoying their new books here – aren’t they so sweet?!

Ok, back to #reslicedHappyMail 😉 …

If you know someone who could use a little reminder that they are special, nominate them for a piece of #reslicedHappyMail! Read all about it here.

What I’m Lovin’ in January

Happy New Year, friends! I hope you’re feeling refreshed and inspired!

There are loads of things I’m lovin’ this month, but I’ll try to keep my list condensed 😉

1. the Lady Loves Valentine’s Day Gift Box

{Photo credit: @nothinbutnola on Instagram – image linked}

This year I’m lovin’ the Galentine’s Day twist on this holiday! Any excuse to celebrate the cool women I know and I’m totally in.

One of my very favorite local artists, Rachel Tenny, has partnered with North Carolina based Nothin’ But Nola and All She Wrote Notes to offer the Lady Loves Valentine’s Day Gift BoxYou can order this gift box [packed with hand-mixed granola, a set of #SpreadJoyAndHappyMail cards and a hand-drawn calligraphy tag that says “You’re so Loved”] for your Bestie (or all your friends or your Mom or your dog who promises to share with you…anyone!) and they’ll ship it straight to her for $15! I’ve already ordered two and I’m thinking about going back for more… {read more about the gift box here!}

Edit: the gift box is no longer available, but you can browse all the other goodies in the Nothin’ but Nola shop here and keep up with them on Facebook and Instagram for future deals!

2. My Candy Rush combo from Candied Cottons

candied cottons

How adorable is this set?!

I won this set through a giveaway on Instagram which was super exciting! I love giveaways and I’m pretty sure I’ll be hosting one soon [time to share the love!] so stay tuned 😉

The smallest pouch (called the Taffy Tote) is the perfect size for holding gift cards (like all those you got for Christmas & don’t want to lose!). I’m using the larger pouch (called the Sugar Cube Clutch) to hold my coupons. And I’m keeping the 2 from losing each other by attaching the wrist strap to both. Oh – and the key chain – it’s on my key ring!

The best part?! The fabric Lindsey used on the set I won is from my favorite fabric collection – Arizona by April Rhodes.

3. A cute way to identify my bag at the airport

After our plane arrived in London, the Hubs and I thought we had lost a bag (which just-so-happened to be the bag full of presents). It was a generic red suitcase that we had borrowed from my sister-in-law. It also happened to be the only piece of luggage that didn’t have a scrap piece of fabric tied to it and a “Jordan” key chain hooked on it (my grandparents have been putting versions these in our stockings for years so I have quite a collection. They come in handy as quick identifiers on luggage when traveling).

I entered a giveaway on Cristali-Designs’ blog before leaving for England and I actually won the “surprise” she promised to a lucky reader. When I found this adorable gal in my mailbox when we got home, I immediately hooked her to the piece of luggage (which will eventually be returned to my sister-in-law who travels more than us so I’m sure they key chain come in handy!).

4. My MagSoul KnotTwisted Headband

You can't help but love that pattern, amiright?!

You can’t help but love that pattern, amiright?!

This month, MagSoul celebrated it’s fifth anniversary (which in the handmade business world is like eternity). I met Mags through my blog post about Vintage Charlotte. Somehow I’d skipped right over her booth at the event which is a real tragedy. Nonetheless, the generous Mags offered to send me a KnotTwisted Headband to try out which I was (and am!) super excited about! I’m not great at wearing headbands and wraps like these, but Mags provides some pretty spiffy tips (here) that I memorized before giving it a try.

magsoul2

Try # 5,438, but I finally got it!

As proof in my post on IG, these headbands are perfect for Horrible Hair Friday!

If you’re not already, you need to go follow @MagSoulShop on Instagram – I love her witty, girl-power posts and I think you will too!

5. My “Hey Shug” mug made by my sister

shug mug

Y’all know I’m kind of a mush. So when my sister gifted this mug to me I teared up a little. My Gammy used to call everyone “shug”. I know I’ve told y’all about her before – she’s my inspiration for nearly everything, but especially my creative adventures.

My sister recently got a vinyl cutting machine and she has gone to town with it! So she made my Mom and I matching mugs for Christmas. They’re perfect.

6. Using up my fabric scraps [to make room for more fabric of course]

As an fabric-lovin’-sewist, I’ve got a pretty extensive collection of fabric yet I’m always longing for more. I’m trying to use up what I already have because 1) it’s cheaper / eco-friendly and 2) it helps me clear out space for new fabric!

In the middle of my craft room, I had a bundle of scrubs that my stepsister had passed on to me. Originally I thought I’d use them to make totes (the placement of the pockets on the tops make them super easy to convert into functional totes), but decided to use them for the drawstring pouches instead.

drawstring bags

The material came entirely (except for the 1 silver ribbon) from the scrubs: the blue exterior is from the pant legs, the strings came from the waist of the pants, and the appliqued gift patches came from a festive top. I hadn’t made drawstring bags before so I was surprised at how easy they were. I found most of my instructions in the sewing books I brought back from England (will blog soon!) so I don’t have a tutorial to link, but I’m sure you can easily find one on Pinterest.

7. #reslicedHappyMail

happy mail

I hope you heard all about my new initiative in last week’s post, but if you didn’t here’s the run-down: If you know someone who could use a little reminder that they are special, nominate them to receive a piece of #reslicedHappyMail by filling out the form here. Be sure to read the original post to review all those pesky little rules.

I’ve got my first nominee’s card constructed and I’m hoping to finalized it and send it out in the next week. Stay tuned for the story!

What I’m Lovin’ in October

October is my favorite month of the year! I’m sad to see it go, but man was October good to me 🙂

{Image via Pinterest}

{Image via Pinterest}

There are so many things that I’m lovin’ this month, but here’s my short list!

oct

Since October is my birthday month, you’ll have to forgive the fact that almost all of my favorites this month revolve around that 🙂

Oh, well – Cheers to being one year older!

1. the watercolor family portrait by Rachel Tenny my sister had made for me

If you've ever met me, the Hubs and our pets, you know how very SPOT ON this painting is ;)

If you’ve ever met me, the Hubs and our pets, you know how very SPOT ON this painting is. 😉

Y’all know how much I love my sister and when it comes to birthdays, she never disappoints! She’s also been pushing me to get some family pictures taken (no wedding = no fancy couple pictures) so this was the perfect solution! 😉

A few months ago, I discovered Rachel on Instagram through some common friends. Her posts are so thoughtful and uplifting – not to mention beautiful. Of course, I had told my sister all about how much I loved her work.

When I opened the portrait (which my sister had framed beautifully…upside down!), I almost cried. It was beyond thoughtful and something I will cherish forever.

My sister says that Rachel was amazing to work with! I’m shamelessly encouraging you to support this super talented local artist by ordering from her shop, but secretly I want to hoard all her time because I have about a billion family portraits I want her to make for me! 🙂

2. the Lavender Mocha at Drip

Lucky for me, my birthday fell on a Saturday this year which means I talked my sister, brother-in-law and the Hubs into going to The Good Life Cafe for brunch followed by a stroll through the Soda City market which ultimately landed us at my very favorite coffee shop, Drip on Main where Rachel aka “the Best Barista in Town” (as confirmed by Free Times) treated me to an iced Lavender Mocha {to.die.for. – for real, go grab one now!}

The Lavender Mocha is to.die.for!

Thank you for the treat, Rachel!

3. Learning new tricks to make my snail mail even fancier!

After learning the calligraphy basics (read more about that here), I’ve been diligently practicing and sending obnoxious amounts of snail mail (this month brought on a great excuse for thank you notes!). I was thrilled when I ran across a tutorial for “5 Unique Ways to Address an Envelope” on The Postman’s Knock.

{Source: The Postman's Knock - click the image for link}

The best part about the post is that she includes styles that you can do without any “real” calligraphy training (aka: faux calligraphy).

4. Flowers

The morning of my birthday, the Hubs said he was going for a run. An hour later he arrived home carrying a vase full of beautiful flowers! Not only were they gorgeous on their own, the story of how they got to my house paints quite a comical picture: The Hubs arrived at Publix, picked out pink roses for sentimental value (the first flowers he ever bought me were pink roses), baby’s breath because they are my favorite and yellow because who doesn’t love yellow?! Then bought a vase, scissors and a bottle of water [which must have come from a cooler because the vase nearly slipped out of my hands from all the condensation!]. He cut the stems in the parking lot and arranged them all by himself in the parking lot of Publix. I can only imagine what this looked like to the grocery shoppers that morning!

flowers

I think we’re all familiar with the fate of most plants that end up in my care (remember the Dutchess?), but my sister insisted on sending pansies home with me last weekend.

After a bit of resistance, I gave in and took those pretty purple flowers home to adorn my porch for as long as I can keep them alive.

pansies

I have to admit, being greeted by colorful little flowers after a long day of work sure is splendid. 🙂

5. Any excuse to shop for vintage clothes!

One of my favorite local vintage shops is having a sale on Saturday, November 8th from 12-4pm at the Conundrum Music Hall. The Thrifted Sisters are two super sweet sister-in-laws who have a knack for finding the coolest vintage apparel (and other neat vintage goodies) and making them generously available to you (and me!).

thrifted sisters

Aside from the event on Nov. 8th (which you should definitely go to), you can find their goodies on Instagram (you get first dibs there and you’re the first to hear about sales!) and Etsy.

My friend Shanika and I attended the  last party the gals threw and we had a blast trying on some super cool vintage outfits – like this awesome faux fur wrap Shanika found:

This picture makes me feel regret for not snatching this for myself!

And last, but not least: I’m lovin’…

6. All of you who made me feel so special on my birthday!

If you're not following Kid President on Facebook, you need to! {Click the image for a link to his page}

If you’re not following Kid President on Facebook, you need to! {Click the image for a link to his page}

I love birthdays – not only because they’re full of delicious treats (like homemade cupcakes from my sister!), but because they’re a reminder of the fact that people care about you! My heart is so full from all the birthday love this month. Thank you to everyone who made me feel so stinkin’ special!
